The Observatory

Observatory house, so named because of the long connection with the celebrated astronomer the late Albert Jansen, Albert arrived from Holland many years ago to study and photograph the night sky in The Karoo, world famous as one of the best sites on our planet to view the wonders of the celestial heavens, he started by taking his telescopes out into the bush and using a neighbours farm was renowned for his star lectures which many of the local inhabitants still remember fondly, this of course was quite an upheaval for the delicate instruments and so the observatory at No 3 Mark st Prince Albert was born.

Unfortunately Albert Succumbed to a fatal illness in june 2004 just 4 days after the transit of venus and the one event he had literally waited all his life for, 6 months later the observatory was acquired by the present owner, who happened to be an amateur astronomer, and who felt that the legacy of Alberts work and passion should live on in that small place in the great Karoo under the canopy of the cosmos.

The Equipment in the observatory comprises a Meade LX200  10" polar mounted on a pier, a Meade 16" Dobsonian and a 4" refractor with solar filter.  A Coronado P.S.T. is also introduced on occassions neatly piggy backed on the LX200 and coupled to a web cam has produced some interesting images of solar prominances.

Most of the images on the gallery page were taken with a range of cameras including  a Nikon D50 DSLR and Watec 120N from modern astronomy in surrey U.K. this is a monochrome deep space imager and produces wonderful live images of galaxies, nebula and star clusters.
